Junk Food
In this era, many kinds of foods are consumed by people. One of that is junk food.
Junkfood is an informal term applied to some foods that are perceived to have little or no nutritional (containing ‘empty calories’) and some foods that have ingredients considered unhealthy when regularly eaten. The term was coined by Michael Jacobson, director of the Center of Science in the Public Interest, in 1972.
Junk foods are typically ready to eat. It contains high levels of saturated fats, salt, sugar, little or no fruit, vegetables or dietary fiber and are considered to have little or no health benefits.
What’s wrong with junk food?
1. Too much fat. Such as in hamburgers, pizza, fried chicken and chips.
2. Too much salt. Such as in cereals.
3. Too much sugar. Such as in soft drinks, cordials, and lollies. That’s what makes them taste so good.
Something that overload can give bad impact. Same like with junk foods. They are give negative impacts to our body especially when we consume it very often. There are several bad effects/impacts of junk foods:
1. Obesity. Junk food has content will cause obesity. Example, oil and grease that are used for fries and contain of sodas and colas which are laden with sugar and which increase our tendency to put on weight.
2. Lethargy. Processed foods tends to bring down energy levels and make lethargic because they are filled with carbohydrates that spike the blood sugar levels.
3. Diseases. Junk food causes diseases like diabetes and heart ailments. The fat from junk food raises cholesterol levels and clogged arteries cause heart attacks and bring on strokes.
4. Poor nutrition. This means that your body does not get the necessary nutrition that it need. It will make weak our immune system. So we prone to illnesses like colds and fevers.
5. Constipation and other ills. Processed foods have no fiber content so it makes constipation. Sodas and colas also contain phosphorous and other chemicals which ruin teeth and eat away bones. It make prone to frequent sprains and fractures.
Many people just know that junk foods are likely McDonald’s, hamburger, french fries, chips, and fried chicken. But according to WHO (World Health Organization) that junk foods are:
1. FriedFood
2. Canned Food
3. Pickled Food
4. Foods Processed Meats (ham, sausage)
5. Instant Noodles
6. Frozen Sweet Dish
Although junk foods have little or no health benefits, it still popular because of their simplicity to manufacture, consume and of course their taste. So there are some tips to consume junk foods:
1. Choose rice for stapple food
2. Reduce portion sizes
3. Replace soft drinks with mineral water or fruit juice
4. Do not consume chicken skin
5. Ask for salad
6. Reduce the sauce and mayonnaise
7. Read the nutritional value information on labels
8. Get used to eat breakfast at home
9. Sport
A study by Paul Johnson and Paul Kenny at The Scripps Research Institute (2008) told that junk food consumption altern brain activity in a manner similar to addictive drugs like cocaine or heroin. So we must control our body to consume junk food.
